| Excerpts from the poetry of Mevlâna Jalâluddîn RumiVersions by Coleman Barks
From Open Secret Say Yes QuicklyForget your life. Say God is Great. Get up.You think you know what time it is. It’s time to pray.
You’ve carved so many little figurines, too many.
Don’t knock on any random door like a beggar.
Reach your long hands out to another door, beyond where
you go on the street, the street
where everyone says, “How are you?”
and no one says How aren’t you?
Tomorrow you’ll see what you’ve broken and torn tonight, thrashing in the dark. Inside you
there’s an artist you don’t know about.
He’s not interested in how things look different in moonlight.
If you are here unfaithfully with us,you’re causing terrible damage.
If you’ve opened your loving to God’s love,
you’re helping people you don’t know
 and have never seen.
Is what I say true? Say yes quickly,if you know, if you’ve known it
from before the beginning of the universe.
QuatrainsFor years, copying other people, I tried to know myself. From within, I couldn’t decide what to do.
Unable to see, I heard my name being called.
 Then I walked outside.
The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.Don’t go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
 Don’t go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
 where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
 Don’t go back to sleep.
From Unseen Rain QuatrainsDon’t let your throat tightenwith fear. Take sips of breath
all day and night. Before death
 closes your mouth.
There’s no love in me without your being,no breath without that. I once thought
I could give up this longing, then though again,
But I couldn’t continue being human.
From This Longing Two Kinds of IntelligenceThere are two kinds of intelligence: One acquired,as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.
With such intelligence you rise in the world. You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
 marks on your preserving tablets.
There is another kind of tablet, onealready completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It’s fluid,
and it doesn’t move from outside to inside
 through the conduits of plumbing-learning.
This second knowing is a fountainheadfrom within you, moving out.
Mathnawi IV:1960-1968 From Feeling the Shoulder of the Lion You Are the Only Student You HaveYou are the only faithful student you have. All the others leave eventually.
Have you been making yourself shallowwith making other eminent?
Just remember, when you’re in union, you don’t have to fear
 that you’ll be drained.
The command comes to speak, and you feel the ocean
 moving through you.
 Then comes, Be silent,
 as when the rain stops,
and the trees in the orchard
 begin to draw moisture
 up into themselves.
