Recording of weekly sohbet with Shaikh Kabir and Camille Helminski.

“In the Qur’an, a lot is said about signs. Allah speaks sometimes as the voice of ‘We.’ God says in  the Qur’an, We will show them Our Signs on the farthest horizons and in themselves until they  know that this is the truth. So it is through that continual manifesting of  signs that we are in  communication. So that’s another thing and a very important thing. I can think of one Sufi  school/ lineage that suggests that the spiritual work is all about actualizing our communication with the Divine. And communication can be prayer, it can be art, it can be dance, it can be  music, it can be service. In fact, in reality, it’s all of life. It can be, potentially, every thought is  communication—as long as it is conscious. But, viewed in that way, the work of the dervish is to  increase our capacities to communicate with the Creative Spirit. And the meaning of that, the  reality of that, covers every aspect of life, every manifestation of life. Every condition of life is in  one way or another the manifestation of the sum total of our ability to be in communication with  the Divine. And sometimes our communication is unconscious and beyond our control, but  there is a part of that communication which is conscious and which is developed in a  conscious process. Prayer is an aspect of it, intention is an aspect of it, humility—the humility that listens, the humility that is aware, the modesty of not knowing is part of it.”
