When I first began to ask this question, I assembled a list of attributes that seemed essential: a certain capacity for attention and conscious choice, rather than the random distraction and following the path of least resistance, a capacity for unconditional love and compassion rather than being a slave to opinion and negativity; a state of hopeful contentment rather than dissatisfaction and endless desires of the self.
